Did You Know What Pests Are Threats to Your Pets?

Ever wondered about the lurking dangers that ticks, fleas, cockroaches, rodents, stinging insects, caterpillars, mosquitoes, and even flies can bring to your furry companions? Join us as we delve into the potential hazards to your pets from these pesky threats.

Ticks

Ticks

Depending on the species, these illnesses could include Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and “tick paralysis”, an illness that causes muscle weakness, loss of coordination and potentially death from respiratory failure as chest muscles become paralysed. By keeping your lawns well maintained and always being sure to walk your pets on trails where ticks are less likely to be found will assist in protecting your pet.

Fleas

Fleas

This very small pest can cause itchy, red bumps that make your pet itch uncontrollably. They can also cause anaemia, and flea allergy dermatitis and can transfer tapeworms. Fleas are known for their ability to reproduce quickly.

This makes a flea infestation very difficult to manage, however, there are preventative measures that can be taken to avoid fleas in the home. Bathing your pets regularly, especially with a shampoo that kills fleas of all life stages, is a great way to prevent fleas. Also, vacuum the house and wash your pet’s bedding, crates, and toys regularly. Veterinarians can recommend preventative flea treatments for cats and dogs.

Coakroaches.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches can contaminate food, trigger allergens, bring in diseases, and occasionally bite. These insects can pose a threat to both humans and pets that live together, with the most common problem being the transfer of diseases through droppings, saliva, or their bodies.

Rodents

Rodents

Cats and dogs can become infected with Roundworm by eating mice or rats infected with Roundworm larvae. Roundworms are a common intestinal parasitic worm found in young dogs and cats. These worms feed upon the contents of the intestines and therefore compete for nutrients a dog or cat would normally ingest.

Stinging Insects and Spiders

Stinging Insects and Spiders

Insect bites and stings are very common in Qld, and the effects on pets can range from very mild to life-threatening or fatal. Your pet should be examined immediately by a veterinarian if they have been outside or in the garden, and then vomit, have trouble breathing, collapse or develop facial swelling.

Caterpillars

Some Caterpillars can be poisonous to pets, in particular the white cedar moth which is found in all Australian states and territories except Tasmania. With fine hairs covering their body, contact with these caterpillars can result in itching and swelling. Pets that lick, chew, or ingest the caterpillars can be at risk of problems from hairs becoming embedded in the mouth and throat. Inhalation of airborne hairs can also result in respiratory complications.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes

A bite from a mosquito can result in annoying itches and more serious parasitic diseases for your pets. In dogs, heartworm disease is the primary concern. A serious condition that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, organ damage, and death in dogs and other pets. In cats, mosquito bite hypersensitivity and heartworm disease are the primary concerns. Mosquito bite hypersensitivity can result in a reaction of the cat's immune system to a mosquito bite. In cats, this exhibits as lesions, scaling or raw ulcers in the area of the bite.

Flies

Flies

Generally, if your pet eats a fly, it's likely not a significant concern. Flies can carry diseases, bacteria, and parasites, but your pet’s stomach's acidic contents usually eliminate most bacteria. While flies are often just a nuisance, they can potentially transmit diseases to animals. For dogs, occasional insect consumption is usually not worrisome. Dogs often view flies as entertaining treats, especially when caught in mid-air. The most common problem in dogs is fly-bite dermatitis of their ears and other parts of their bodies.
